Data deletion

Last reviewed November 6, 2026

In plain words: you can delete your SchoolBoardNews account and the data tied to it yourself, at any time, and it can't be undone. If you don't have an account, or you'd rather ask us, use the privacy request form. We answer within 30 days.

This page explains how to delete the data SchoolBoardNews holds about you. For everything we collect and why, see our privacy policy.

Delete your account

  1. On the website: sign in, open your profile page, choose Delete my account and confirm.
  2. In the iPhone app: go to Account, choose Delete account and confirm. If you signed in with Apple, deleting from the app also revokes Sign in with Apple. (Accounts that use Sign in with Apple are deleted from the app, not the website.)
  3. If you have a paid plan, cancel it first under Your plan. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription.

Deleting is immediate and permanent. We can't restore an account after it is deleted.

No account? Ask us

You don't need an account to ask. If you only signed up for the newsletter, sent us a form, or can't sign in, use the privacy request form and choose “Delete my data”, or email privacy@schoolboardnews.app from the address we hold. We use that address to check the request is yours. You can also ask us to stop our emails, send you a copy of your data, or correct it.

We'll honor your request wherever you live, including under Washington and California law and the GDPR.

What gets deleted

Deleting your account permanently removes:

  • your profile and preferences, including saved places and followed districts
  • saved stories, saved searches and alerts, and your device's push tokens
  • your notifications
  • your comments (the text is erased), reactions and reports you sent
  • your friendships and the stories you shared with friends
  • the usage analytics linked to your account ID. Our analytics provider finishes removing them in the background after the request.
  • your sign-in record

A report you sent stays so editors can finish handling it, but it is no longer linked to you.

What we keep, and for how long

A few things outlive an account, for the reasons and periods below. After that they are deleted.

Your request and our answer
Two years after we close it, then deleted. This dated record shows we answered in time.
Newsletter address you unsubscribed from
Kept marked “unsubscribed” so we never email it again, unless you ask us to remove it entirely.
Newsletter sign-up attempts
A scrambled (hashed) form of the address with the time of each attempt, for two days, to limit abuse.
Daily-limit counts for “Ask about my district” and “Look for more coverage”
No more than 30 days. They hold no question or answer text.
Sponsor applications, job listings and profile requests
Declined and withdrawn sponsor applications and profile requests are deleted after a year; declined, withdrawn and closed job listings after 180 days.
Server logs at our hosting and email providers
Kept for those providers' standard periods, which we don't control.

Stories on SchoolBoardNews are publishers' reporting, not data about you. To ask us to remove, unlist or correct a story that names you or your child, use the removal request form. To have a publisher's photo or an outlet taken down, use the correction and takedown form.

How long it takes

Account deletion in the app or on the website happens right away. For a request by form or email, we confirm by email that we received it and answer within 30 days. If we can't act on something, we'll say why.

Facebook, Instagram, Google and Apple

SchoolBoardNews has no Facebook or Instagram login, so we don't hold a Facebook account link for you. If you saw our ad on Facebook or Instagram, your data there is managed by Meta; use Meta's privacy tools to delete or limit it. If you signed in with Google or Apple, deleting your SchoolBoardNews account removes our record of you; to also stop Google or Apple sharing with us, remove SchoolBoardNews from the connected apps in your Google or Apple account settings.
